NYIRAGONGO VOLCANO IN CONGO

Nyiragongo (also spelled Niragongo), one of the world’s most beautiful and active volcanoes, is a large stratovolcano near Lake Kivu at the eastern border of DRCongo with Rwanda in the Virunga National Park. It has a 1.2 km diameter summit caldera containing the world’s most active and largest lava lake. The volcano partly overlaps with two older volcanoes, Baratu and Shaheru, and is also surrounded by hundreds of small volcanic cinder cones from flank eruptions. Nyiragongo is also known for its extremely fluid lava that runs as water when the lava lake drains.

When it comes to food while on your hike, instead of packing prepared meals, you can have a “volcano-cooked” meal: pay a volcano staff to climb the volcano and cook for you. The cook will carry snacks, drinks, and prepare dinner when you get to the summit. They will also serve belly-warming beverages to battle the cold temperatures. Note however, that you may feel dizzy because of the altitude, it’s important to keep yourself well fed and hydrated.
