Bwindi impenetrable forest attracts tourists around the world just to see the iconic endangered mountain gorillas. The park is found in the south western direction of Uganda, about 530 km from the city center of Kampala. The park is a famous destination for a spectacular gorilla trekking experience. It is a UNESCO designated world heritage site.

Bwindi impenetrable forest has 15 habituated gorilla families and they are always available for trekking daily. When trekking, you’re only allowed to spend an hour with the gorillas, although now there is an option to gain access to these gentle creatures with the gorilla researchers.

Gorilla trekking in bwindi impenetrable forest involves hiking through steep hillsides and travelers are divided into a group of 8 members. The time spent while trekking depends on the movement of the gorilla’s family you’re allocated to. Bwindi impenetrable forest has four sectors where you can trek the various habituated gorilla groups. And each sector has different gorilla families.

Buhoma sector is one of the gorilla trekking grounds in bwindi impenetrable forest. Actually gorilla trekking in bwindi started from buhoma. It has 4 gorilla families, so 32 gorilla permits are available per day for gorilla trekking in buhoma sector of bwindi. The gorilla families in buhoma sector include; Mubare family, Rushegura family, habinyanja family and Katwe family.

Ruhija sector is not as developed as buhoma yet but it has 3 gorilla families open for trekking every day. The gorilla families found in Ruhija sector include; Bitukura family, Oruzogo family, Kyaguliro family. There are a number of lodges coming up around the sector.

Rushaga sector is currently is the least developed for tourism but when it comes to gorillas, the sector is nicknamed “the world’s capital city of mountain gorillas” as it has 5 gorilla habituated families, and many others that are not habituated gorilla groups. The gorilla families found in Rushaga sector include; Bwenza family, Nshongi family, Kahungye family, Busingye family, bakingi family.

Nkuringo sector is where the southern headquarters of bwindi impenetrable forest national park are found. Besides the sector having a very tough terrain, Nkuringo sector has one of the best gorilla families in Bwindi impenetrable forest. It has 3 gorilla families and one of them is for habituation experience and the rest are for normal tourism. To trek the nkuringo families requires you to be with a bit more energy and stamina. It is probably the one of the toughest trek but manageable in Uganda. The gorilla families found in Nkuringo sector include; Nkuringo family, Bushaho family and Christmas.
